Spiritual Meaning

Set two vajras across each other at right angles and you have the double vajra, called vishvavajra in Sanskrit and dorje gyatram in Tibetan.

Where a single vajra points two ways, this one points to all four quarters at once, east, south, west and north, with nothing left uncovered. In Tibetan tradition it is linked with stability and with what cannot be moved.

It often sits at the base of things. Some Buddhist accounts picture the world resting on a vast crossed vajra, and the same form is drawn at the foundation of many mandalas.

When a statue is consecrated in Tibet, its hollow base is filled with prayers and offerings and closed with a metal plate. A double vajra is often engraved on that plate, a seal set underneath, where no one sees it.

In Chinese it is known as the karma vajra, the vajra of activity, tied in some teachings to work carried through to completion.

Give it a place at the base of your own days, on a desk, an altar or a sill, as a reminder that a steady foundation holds more than it shows.

The Ground Beneath Everything

There is no top to it and no bottom. Four vajra heads meet at a round hub, each one the same as the other three, so it looks the same whichever way you set it down. Pick it up and it sits squarely across your palm, about 10.5 cm from tip to tip and heavier than its size suggests, nearly 190 g of metal that settles your hand rather than filling it.

Give it a place where things begin. On a desk, near the spot where you set down your cup each morning. At the foot of a home altar, beneath the offerings, the way a foundation sits under a house. On a windowsill, where the light moves around it through the day and finds a different edge each hour. It needs no stand; lay it on a folded cloth or a small wooden tray and leave it there.

There are no stones and no color, only warm metal with the darker shadow held in its folds and the raised edges rubbed brighter. Everything about it is plain and steady. It is the kind of object you stop noticing after a week, and then miss the day it is moved.

Four Heads, One Hub

The double vajra is golden metal, handcrafted as a single piece in openwork. It measures about 10.5 × 10.5 cm (4.1 × 4.1 in) across and 3.5 cm (1.4 in) thick, and weighs around 188 g (6.6 oz).

At the center is a round hub with a faint cloud pattern on its face. From it, four arms reach out at right angles. Each begins with a lotus seat, its petals and beaded rim worked into the metal, and opens into a vajra head: curved prongs rising from scrolled cloud roots and closing around a short central point with a squared tip.

There are no stones or inlay. The recesses hold a dark tone and the raised edges are worn brighter, which brings out the lotus petals and the scrolls. Meant for an altar or a desk and not to be worn, it ships without a stand.
