Spiritual Meaning

In Tibetan tradition, dzi beads have been worn close to the body and handed down for generations, kept less as ornaments than as companions.

Many dzi patterns carry their own names, and Dalo is one of them. The round eyes on a dzi are read as auspicious marks. On this bead, a full eye on the face and a half eye at each end are counted by some as three, and linked to the Three Jewels of Buddhism: the Buddha, the teacher; the Dharma, the teaching; and the Sangha, the community that walks the path together.

This dzi is newly made. What it carries is the shape of the tradition, worn simply on a braided cord.

Wear it as a small, steady reminder to pause, return to a single breath, and begin again.

One Dzi on a Dark Cord

Dalo is the name of a traditional dzi pattern, and this bead carries it: a round eye on its face, dark bands sweeping into an X along the sides, and half an eye at each end. Counted together, some read them as three eyes.

It sits at the center of a black cord braided by hand, with a red glass bead on either side, then copper beads dotted with red and blue-green inlay, a blue-green disc, and a single agarwood bead. Light on the wrist and quiet in color, it goes from a mountain trail to the cushion without a second thought. When the day gets loud, find the dzi with your thumb and come back to a single breath.

Agate and a Braided Cord

The dzi is agate, and its Dalo pattern runs a little differently from one dzi to the next. The two red beads are glass, the two round copper beads are set with small red and blue-green dots, the flat disc is blue-green, and the brown bead is agarwood. Three small round beads, yellow, black and green, finish the cord ends.

The black cord is braided by hand. One size fits wrists of 5.9–7.5 in (15–19 cm).
