Double Vajra Gau Box Pendant with Endless Knot Back
Spiritual Meaning
In Tibet, a gau is a portable shrine. For centuries Tibetan Buddhists have worn one at the neck or tied to their clothing, a small sanctuary carried against the body.
Inside, by tradition, go the things that matter most: a tiny clay image of the Buddha or a protector, a prayer or mantra written out by a lama, a blessed thread, a scrap of cloth from a sacred place. Sealed and worn close, the gau has long been carried as an amulet of protection: for the pilgrim on the road, the traveler crossing a high pass, and all the ordinary days in between.
On the front is the double vajra, two vajra scepters crossed into one. The vajra stands for what cannot be broken. Crossed, its four heads reach toward the four directions, and in Tibetan tradition it is a sign of stability, a ground that holds steady on every side.
On the back is the endless knot, one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols. Its line has no beginning and no end, a picture of how all things are bound together, and of wisdom and compassion as one.
Around both runs a ring of lotus, the flower that rises clean from muddy water.
What you place inside is yours to choose. Close the lid, carry it with you, and let it remind you that you never walk the road alone.

A Shrine You Can Carry
Long before there were pockets, there was the gau. A small metal box hung at the throat or tied to a sash, it held what a traveler could not leave behind: a folded prayer written in a teacher's hand, a tiny clay image of the Buddha, a thread or scrap of cloth from a holy place. Pilgrims wore one on the long road to Lhasa. Herders wore one across the high pastures. Closed tight against wind and dust, it went everywhere they went.
This one is round and solid in the palm, a little over two inches across and an inch deep. On the front, a silvery double vajra crosses over a small stone of stabilized turquoise; turn it over and an endless knot waits on the back. Loosen the small screw and it swings open on its hinge, hollow and empty, ready for whatever you choose to keep close: a few written lines, a mantra, a name. Then close it, and let it rest against your chest, a quiet place that is only yours.
Copper, Mixed Metal and Small Stones
The box is made of copper, a warm reddish brown that deepens toward the rim and inside. On the front, a raised copper center holds a silvery double vajra set with a single stabilized turquoise stone, circled by a line of tiny beads. Around it runs a band of lotus-shaped appliqué in silvery, golden and copper-red metal, with small round red stones and stabilized turquoise set in between, and a silvery beaded edge at the outer rim. The back repeats the same ring around a silvery endless knot.
The two halves are joined by a hinge on one side and close with a small screw on the other, its pointed golden head finishing the edge. A golden loop at the top takes a fine cord or chain. Each piece is handcrafted and assembled by hand, so the metal tones and stones vary slightly from piece to piece. About 5.5 cm (2.2 in) across and 2.5 cm (1 in) thick; the hollow inside is about 4.3 cm (1.7 in) across and 2 cm (0.8 in) deep. Sold empty, as the pendant only: cord or chain not included.
