Spiritual Meaning

In Tibetan the vajra is called dorje, a name often explained as lord of stones: the hardest thing there is, the one that cannot be scratched or split.

In Tibetan Buddhism it is a sign of the mind's true nature, something traditionally described as unbreakable, unchanged by whatever passes through it.

In practice the dorje is the partner of the bell. Tradition gives the dorje to method, compassion put into action, and the bell to wisdom; the practitioner holds one in each hand, never one without the other.

The five-pronged form is among the most familiar in Tibetan ritual. What each prong stands for is taught differently from lineage to lineage, and we leave that reading to the teachers who hold it.

The blue-green of the inlay belongs to a long Himalayan habit of pairing warm metal with the color of open sky. Here it comes from the blue-green inlay.

Keep it near you as a reminder of something in you that does not crack under pressure.

Weight in the Palm

Close your hand around the middle and it fits: the ribbed center band under your fingers, a lotus seat pressing lightly against each side of your fist, the prongs reaching out past your thumb and your little finger. At about 176 g it has real weight, more than you expect from something the length of a hand. The metal is cool at first. Hold it through a few slow breaths and it takes on the warmth of your skin.

That is one way to use it. Sit, rest the vajra in your lap or your open palm, and let its weight be the thing you return to when the mind drifts. Afterward, lay it on its side on the altar, on a folded cloth by a candle, or on the desk where your eyes land between tasks. It asks for nothing but a clear surface.

On each lotus seat, small wedges of blue-green inlay are fitted edge to edge, with thin dark seams between them, like ice that has cracked and still holds. Turn it slowly and the blue comes and goes against the warm metal.

Five Prongs, Two Lotus Seats

The vajra is golden metal, handcrafted in openwork, about 15.5 cm (6.1 in) long and 5 cm (2 in) across at its widest. At each end, four prongs curve outward from scrolled cloud roots and bend back in to meet over a straight central point, making five in all. The prongs carry incised lines and facets, and the spaces between them are open.

At the center, a round, ribbed band of brighter, silvery metal joins two inverted lotus seats. Each seat is ringed with a beaded metal edge and faced with blue-green inlay: wedge-shaped pieces set side by side, separated by fine dark seams, with a dark web of veining across their surface.

The tone varies from piece to piece and with the light. In some, the metal reads a bright yellow and the inlay a sky blue; in others the metal is deeper, with dark tone settled into the recesses, and the inlay leans green-blue. It weighs about 176 g (6.2 oz). It is a ritual object for the hand and the altar, not for wear, and comes without a stand.
