Inlaid Vajra in Red, Blue-Green and Deep Blue
Spiritual Meaning
The vajra, dorje in Tibetan, is the scepter of Tibetan Buddhist ritual, one of the objects most often seen on Himalayan altars.
Tradition reads it as a picture of awakened mind: clear, steady, and not worn down by what it meets.
Look at the prongs. On a peaceful vajra they curve inward until their tips rest against the center; on a wrathful one they splay outward. The prongs here close in, the peaceful form.
Its two halves grow from lotus seats. In Buddhist art the lotus is the seat of the awakened, a flower rooted in mud whose petals open spotless above the water, and whatever rests on it is shown as pure.
Red, turquoise blue and deep blue run through Himalayan altar work, from painted temple beams to inlaid ritual metal. Here all three meet in the inlay.
Place it where you sit, and let its closed tips be a reminder that strength can be gentle and at rest.

Three Colors Around a Still Center
Most metal on an altar goes quiet in low light. This one doesn't. Red petals and blue-green petals open around both lotus seats, each one traced in a thin golden line, and at the very middle a band of deep blue, the color of a late evening sky, sits above a ring of red. Even the prongs carry color: a long strip of red down one curve, blue-green inlay down the next.
It is meant to be set down and looked at. Place it at the front of a home altar, between a pair of offering bowls, or alone on a shelf where morning light reaches it. Lay it on its side on a folded cloth; it has no stand, and doesn't need one to be seen. When you sit, you can take it into your lap. The center fills a closed hand, and the metal, matte and a little worn-looking, gives the fingers something to hold onto.
From across the room you see the colors first. Up close you notice how the prongs bend inward at each end and meet over a small teardrop point, closed and at rest.
Panels of Color, Lines of Gold
This vajra is golden metal, handcrafted in openwork, measuring about 14.5 cm (5.7 in) from tip to tip and 5.5 cm (2.2 in) where the prongs swell widest. Its surface is matte, with dark tone settled into the recesses so the modeling stands out.
The center is built in layers. An inverted lotus seat at the top and an upright one below are each faced with petal-shaped panels, long red petals between shorter blue-green ones, every panel outlined in fine golden wire. Between the two seats sit a band of smooth, opaque deep blue inlay and a ring of red panels. The blue-green panels carry fine crackle lines; the red and blue are even in color.
At each end, curved prongs rise from cloud-scroll roots, their outer faces inlaid with long strips of red or blue-green inlay, and close around a central point with a small teardrop tip. Made for the altar rather than for wear, it is sold on its own, without a stand.
