Spiritual Meaning

In Tibetan tradition, dzi beads have been worn close to the body and handed down for generations, kept less as ornaments than as companions.

The round eyes on a dzi are read as auspicious marks. On this bead, a full eye on the face and a half eye at each end are counted by some as three, and linked to the Three Jewels of Buddhism: the Buddha, the teacher; the Dharma, the teaching; and the Sangha, the community that walks the path together.

This dzi is newly made. What it carries is the shape of the tradition: one eye among many colors, easy for your fingers to find without looking.

Wear it as a small, steady reminder to pause, return to a single breath, and begin again.

Multi-bead bracelet with an agate dzi, a grid-patterned yak bone bead, yellow ox bone barrels, turquoise and red beads on an indigo khaden rug

Many Beads, One Circle

Nine kinds of bead share this one strand, in the mixed style of many Tibetan bracelets: one dzi at the center, and around it a little of everything. Turn the dzi in your fingers and you find a round eye on its face, dark bands crossing into an X along the sides. Beside it sit honey-yellow ox bone, turquoise blue, red glass, and a brown yak bone bead netted in white.

No two neighbors match, so your thumb always knows where it is: the smooth turquoise, the waxy yellow bone, the matte red agate. Wear it to the cushion, to your desk, on a slow walk home, and let one bead at a time bring you back to a single breath.

What Each Bead Is

The dzi is agate, and its eye pattern runs a little differently from one dzi to the next. The round brown bead with the white grid is yak bone, not a dzi. The yellow barrels and the single white bead are ox bone. The turquoise is enhanced. The two large red rounds are glass, the red-and-white striped disc is glass as well, and the small brown-red rounds are agate. Each bead's size is listed in the description above.

Four sizes: S for wrists of 5.5–6.7 in (14–17 cm), M 6.7–7.5 in (17–19 cm), L 7.9–9.1 in (20–23 cm), and XL 9.4–10.2 in (24–26 cm). Between sizes, size up.

Made by Hand

One Bead at a Time

Every strand is threaded and knotted by hand, slowly, the way prayer beads have been made for generations. No two come out quite the same.
