Spiritual Meaning

In Tibetan Buddhism, a mala of 108 beads is used to count mantras, one bead for each recitation. The guru bead marks the start and end of a round; by custom you turn back at it rather than pass over it.

Small carved skulls appear often in Tibetan Buddhist art and in malas. They are not meant to frighten. They point to impermanence: everything changes, and holding things lightly is its own kind of ease.

Here the faces are few, two among a long run of soft white beads, so the reminder comes only now and then, the way such thoughts tend to arrive.

White and green are both colors of the prayer flags, where white is linked with air and green with water.

The tassel and the charms are for the hand as much as the eye: something to rest the fingers on at the end of a round.

Wear it, or hold it, as a quiet reminder to count slowly, breathe, and begin again.

Soft Light, and a Few Small Faces

Lay it across your palm and the light settles first: 108 flat beads, milky white, each with a soft sheen that shifts as the strand moves. No two are quite the same. Some sit a little fuller, some carry fine lines across the surface, and together they read less like a row than like a slow current.

Then the small things come into view. Two carved skull beads in warm tan, each with a simple face. Two black beads, each marked with fine white engraving. A ribbed bead of deep green, cool and round under the thumb, set between thin rounds of soft leather so nothing clicks.

Where the ends meet sits the guru bead, a squared piece in honey tones, with a small inlaid dot ringed in brown at its center. Below it, an openwork white bead opens onto a full dark green tassel. Along the strand two charms hang on golden rings: a small pearl-white pendant engraved with golden marks and set with a tiny clear stone, and an orange drop charm with an inlaid dot of its own.

Wrap it three times around the wrist and it rests loosely, the charms and tassel moving against the back of the hand. Or take it in your fingers to count: begin beside the guru bead, one bead for each breath, and when a small face passes under your thumb, let it remind you that this moment, too, is passing.

Pearl-White Beads, Squared Guru Bead and Small Charms

The main strand is 108 pearl-white flat beads, each about 8.3 × 5 mm, milky white with a soft luster. They vary slightly in size and shape, and some show fine lines or small irregularities on the surface.

The two ends meet at a guru bead, a squared T-bead in honey tones with a small inlaid dot set in a brown ring. Small leather spacers sit above and below it. From its lower end a dark green knot leads into an openwork white bead, cut with triangular openings, and a full dark green tassel.

Set along the strand are one green ribbed bead, deep green and softly translucent, with leather spacers on either side; two small carved skull beads in warm tan; and two black beads with engraved white marks. Two charms hang on golden findings: a small pearl-white pendant with golden engraved marks and a tiny clear stone, and a small orange drop charm with an inlaid dot.

Every piece is strung by hand, so the luster of the beads, the color of the inlaid dots and the placement of each charm differ a little from one mala to the next.

Made by Hand

One Bead at a Time

Every strand is threaded and knotted by hand, slowly, the way prayer beads have been made for generations. No two come out quite the same.
