Round Gau Box Pendant with Buddha Eyes or Om
Spiritual Meaning
Across Tibet and the Himalayas, people have long worn a gau: a reliquary small enough to hang from a cord, an altar folded down to the size of a palm. It rides at the chest of herders, traders and pilgrims, under heavy coats and against bare skin, wherever the day leads.
Traditionally it holds what its wearer holds most dear: a tiny image of the Buddha pressed from clay, a mantra copied out by a teacher, a blessing thread, a pinch of earth from a holy place. Closed and carried, the gau has served for generations as an amulet of protection and a portable refuge, a way of keeping the sacred within reach on a journey and in ordinary hours alike.
If your pendant carries the Buddha eyes, it recalls the pair of eyes painted on the four sides of the great Himalayan stupas, gazing out in every direction at once. They are often called the wisdom eyes: the awakened mind that sees all things clearly, and looks on all of them with compassion. The curl between them is commonly read as the numeral one, a sign that all things are one and that there is a single path toward awakening.
If it carries Om, it holds the syllable that opens many of the best-known Tibetan mantras. Tibetan teachers often describe Om as three sounds joined into one, standing for our own body, speech and mind and for the pure body, speech and mind of a Buddha that practice slowly reveals.
If it carries the lotus, it bears a sign counted among the Eight Auspicious Symbols. Rooted in the mud of a pond yet opening unstained above the water, the lotus is a traditional image of a pure heart, and its open petals a picture of awakening in full bloom.
Whatever its face, every one is ringed by lotus petals, so the design sits at the center of a flower, the way a teaching rests at the center of the heart.
Place something of your own inside, or let it stay empty until you know what belongs there.
Description
Design varies. Each gau box carries one of three designs on its face: Buddha eyes, the Om symbol or a lotus. The design is chosen at random and can't be selected, so the pendant you receive may differ from the one in the photos.

Which Face Will Find You
Most pieces you choose. This one meets you halfway. It comes with one of three faces: a pair of Buddha eyes, the syllable Om or an open lotus, and which one arrives is left to chance. Whatever looks up at you from the copper center when you unwrap it, that is the one meant for your road.
In the hand it is small and rounded, a little wider than a silver dollar and nearly an inch deep, warm and golden all over. A ring of lotus petals rises around the center like a flower seen from above. A single blue-green stone sits at the top of the loop, and a small point hangs below. It opens to hold something folded small: a line of prayer, a word you need to remember, a slip of paper with a name. Close it, wear it under your shirt or over it, and let the face keep watch while you go about your day.
Lotus Relief in Warm Metal Tones
The body is golden metal, rounded like a shallow dome. At its center a copper-red disc carries the raised design, Buddha eyes, Om or lotus, inside a fine beaded ring. Around it opens a full circle of lotus petals worked in relief, their edges bright and the hollows between them darkened, so the petals stand out in light and shadow. Beaded borders run around the rim.
At the top, a small bail is capped with a single blue-green stone in a copper-red setting; at the bottom, a pointed golden finial completes the shape. The box opens to hold a small folded prayer or keepsake and is sold empty. Each piece is handcrafted and assembled by hand, so the metal tones, the darkened finish and the exact design vary from one to the next. About 4.4 cm (1.7 in) across and 2.3 cm (0.9 in) thick. Pendant only: cord or chain not included.
