A Little Red, Every Day
It is a small thing: a square of red no bigger than a fingertip, its corners worn soft, its face rounded like a drop of something warm that has just set. The red is deep and even, closer to brick or a ripe persimmon than to a bright cherry, and it seems to glow a little from inside when the light falls across it.
The band is where you look twice. It isn't solid. It is worked into an open lace of tiny diamonds, darkened in the gaps so the pattern stands out, with a line of fine beads along each edge. From a distance it reads as a plain band. Up close it reads like old lace laid flat.
This is a ring for ordinary hours. Wrapping both hands around a cup of tea. Turning the pages of a book. Typing, cooking, reaching for the door. It is easy to forget you have it on until a glance down catches that square of red against your hand, a small warm spot in a gray afternoon.
Square Stone, Lace Band
The stone is a small red cabochon, square with rounded corners and a gentle dome, polished smooth. Its color is a deep brick red, opaque with a soft inner glow, and it varies slightly from ring to ring. It sits in a slim silvery bezel with a bright, narrow rim.
The band is silvery metal with a plated finish, worked in openwork: a lattice of interlaced diamonds, darkened in the recesses so the pattern reads clearly, and edged on both sides with a fine beaded line. It runs out from either side of the stone to an opening at the back of the finger.
That opening makes the ring adjustable, so one size fits most fingers. To change the fit, press the band in or ease it open gently with your fingers, a little at a time, and avoid bending it back and forth in the same spot.
