Spiritual Meaning

In folk lore, the eyes on a dzi are counted and read. Three eyes are often linked to fu, lu and shou, a long-held Chinese trio of wishes for a full life, a good name and long years.

The small round dzi carries the tiger-tooth pattern, zigzag bands said to recall a tiger’s teeth. In folk tradition the tiger stands for courage, the quiet kind that never needs to raise its voice.

The carved skull comes from Tibetan Buddhist art, where skulls appear in the dancing skeleton pair called citipati and in the kapala, the skull cup. They are not there to frighten. They point to impermanence: everything changes, and loosening your grip on what you cannot keep is its own kind of ease.

Red and turquoise together are a classic pairing in Tibetan adornment, and copper set with both is a style seen across the Himalaya. Here the red comes from agate and a red bead, the blue from blue-green beads and inlay, and a bead of yellow chalcedony adds the warm color of a butter lamp.

These dzi are newly made. What they carry is the story, and a bright place for your eye to rest.

Wear it as a reminder that this moment will pass, and that you can meet it fully while it is here.

Dark brown braided cord bracelet with a three-eyed red dzi bead at its center, inlaid copper beads and a carved bone skull bead on a lichen-covered boulder in low dawn light, snow peaks blurred behind

Bright, Then Still

The cord is the dark brown of strong tea, knotted by hand into a tight, even braid. At its center sits a dzi the red of a winter persimmon, cool and weighty in the palm, its white rings drawn round like ripples on a pond. Around it the colors arrive one at a time: a small round dzi crossed by a pale tiger-tooth band, a bright red bead, a warm drop of yellow, a bead of turquoise blue, copper set with red and blue-green, and a little skull carved from white bone, grinning quietly as if it knows something you don't.

You notice it first in the morning sun, when the red dzi seems to glow from inside. After that it is simply there, on the wrist that lifts the coffee, turns the key, rests on the desk while the day gets loud. Your thumb finds the skull, then the smooth dzi beside it. Everything changes. This breath is enough. Bright, then steady, then calm.

Red Dzi, Bone and Copper

The main dzi is red agate with three eyes. Bead traders call this deep red hong rou, “red flesh,” and agate in this color is often sold as nanhong; here it simply means red agate. The second dzi is a small round bead with the tiger-tooth pattern. No two look quite the same.

Around them sit a carved ox bone skull bead, a red bead, copper beads with red and blue-green inlay, a yellow chalcedony bead, a blue-green bead and a small golden bead. The dark brown cord is braided by hand and closes with a sliding knot. About 16 cm around, it opens to 22 cm, so it sits well on a slim wrist or a larger one.

Made by Hand

One Bead at a Time

Every strand is threaded and knotted by hand, slowly, the way prayer beads have been made for generations. No two come out quite the same.
