Tiered Om Gau Box Pendant with Stabilized Turquoise and Red Stones
Spiritual Meaning
A gau is a shrine made to travel. In Tibetan Buddhist tradition it is worn at the neck, tucked beneath a coat or tied to a sash, so that what is sacred never has to stay behind at home.
What goes inside has always been personal: a few lines of scripture folded small, a pressed clay image of the Buddha, a knotted blessing cord, a pinch of earth from a pilgrimage site. Once closed, the gau has traditionally been carried as an amulet of protection, worn across high passes on long journeys and through the plain work of each day, a reminder of refuge kept close to the heart.
At the top sits Om, the sacred syllable that opens many Tibetan mantras. In Buddhist teaching it is often linked with the body, speech and mind of the Buddha, the first sound with which practice begins.
Beneath it, the box rises in tiers, each smaller than the last. The stepped form recalls a stupa or a mandala, which Tibetan tradition reads as pictures of the awakened mind, rising level by level toward a single center.
The double vajra is engraved on the back plate, the side that rests against the body. Two vajras crossed into one, it has long stood for a steadiness that holds in every direction: a foundation kept hidden, close to the skin.
Red and turquoise, paired across every tier, are colors found again and again in Himalayan ornament.
Fill it, or leave it empty for now. Either way, it goes where you go.

Each piece assembled and wrapped by hand
Each piece is handcrafted and assembled by hand. The copper, silver-tone and brass-tone metalwork and the blue-green and red stones carry small variations in tone and texture, so slight differences from the photos are normal and part of its charm. No two pieces are identical. Please allow 3–4 business days to make.
Note: Stabilized turquoise is natural turquoise reinforced with resin for durability, not synthetic glass.

A Small Tower Crowned with Om
Hold it in your palm and it rises like a little terrace of stone. Three tiers climb toward the center, each a step narrower than the one below: long red stones around the base, a ring of stabilized turquoise above them, a circle of small red beads, and at the very top a round turquoise with a golden Om set into its face. The shape recalls the stepped outline of a stupa, or a mandala seen from above: a path that narrows as it climbs.
All of that is only the outside. Lift off the back plate and the box is hollow, its inner walls warm and golden, waiting for something of your own: a folded line of prayer, a mantra, a name you want to keep near. Set the plate back in place and the double vajra engraved on it turns inward, resting against you, where only you know it is there.
Stepped Stone Inlay in Two Metal Tones
The body is metal in two tones: a silvery outer band worked with rope-twist and coiled-wire borders, and golden details in the Om, the fittings and the inner walls. Each of the three tiers is inlaid with stones held between twisted-wire dividers: long red stones around the base, long pieces of stabilized turquoise in the middle, a ring of small round red stones, and the turquoise top stone with its golden Om. The turquoise carries fine dark veining, so no two pieces look quite alike.
On one side sits a tubular loop capped with a small red stone; on the other, a turquoise teardrop, a small ring and a pointed golden finial. Both sides take a fine cord or chain. The back is a flat silvery plate engraved with a double vajra, and it lifts off to open the box, which is hollow inside and sold empty. Each piece is handcrafted and assembled by hand, so stone color and metal tone vary slightly from piece to piece. About 4 cm (1.6 in) across the body, 6 cm (2.4 in) long including the side loops, and 3.5 cm (1.4 in) thick. Pendant only: cord or chain not included.
