Spiritual Meaning

Across the Tibetan plateau, dzi have long been prized above most other beads, and many families count them among their heirlooms.

The pale rings on a dzi are called eyes, and the number a bead carries gives it its name. They are often read as a picture of awareness: seeing clearly, and staying watchful along the way.

A two-eyed dzi is commonly linked with harmony and balance, two forces meeting on equal terms, or two people who walk well together. In Chinese bead lore, its pair of eyes is often likened to yin and yang.

In Tibetan jewelry, a dzi is often strung between coral red and turquoise blue, the colors of fire and of open sky. Here those colors return in a red bead and a blue-green bead on either side.

This dzi is newly made. What it keeps is the idea behind the pattern.

Wear it as a reminder that steadiness rarely means choosing one side. More often it means holding both, and keeping them level.

Two Eyes, Held Level

Stand the dzi on end and it looks back at you: one eye on the left, one on the right, each a dark pupil inside a pale ring, with a broad ivory band running down between them. Neither eye is larger. Neither sits higher. The pattern is drawn as a pair, and that is the whole idea of it.

In dzi lore, two eyes are read as two forces meeting on equal terms: two people side by side, or the part of you that wants to go and the part that wants to stay. The bead doesn't pick a winner. It keeps them level, the way you steady a full bowl with both hands.

The rest of the necklace keeps the same rule. On each side, a bead of turquoise blue, then one of red, then a small engraved spacer, matched left and right along a dark brown cord. Draw the sliding knots in and the dzi lies sideways at the base of your throat, between the collarbones. Ease them out and it lifts over your head.

No two dzi leave the making quite alike. A band runs a little wider here, an eye sits a shade off center there. The one that comes to you will be its own, not a copy of the photo.

Agate, Cord and Two Sliding Knots

The dzi is agate, a long barrel about 30.6 × 10.6 mm (1.2 × 0.4 in) that narrows slightly toward each end. Its ivory and dark brown pattern shows two ringed eyes on opposite sides, each framed by a dark border and a broad ivory band, with two or three narrower bands circling each end. The surface is polished to a soft gloss.

On either side sit a blue-green bead of 6 mm, a red bead of 7 mm and a small spacer pressed with a fine pattern, each set apart by a tiny knot of thread. The cord is dark brown, braided round, about 3 mm thick.

There is no clasp. Two sliding knots, each finished with a small round bead, open the cord to about 65 cm (25.6 in) so it slips over the head, then draw it in to sit at the collarbone. Each dzi varies a little in its bands, its eyes and the shade of its ivory, so the bead you receive may differ slightly from the one in the photos.

Questions

How long is the necklace, and how does it close?

Length and clasp details for each piece are listed in the description above. Most of our necklaces close with a hand-forged S-hook and a short extender chain, so the length can be adjusted by a few centimeters. Some pieces use an adjustable cord instead. If a piece can also be wrapped around the wrist, its description says so.

How should I care for my piece?

Keep it away from water, perfume and harsh sunlight. See our care guides.

How much is shipping?

Free on orders of $99 or more, worldwide. Below that, standard shipping is $8. Each order takes 3–4 business days to prepare by hand, then about 7–12 business days to reach the US, or 7–20 business days elsewhere. Expedited shipping is available at checkout. Shipping Policy

Can I return it?

Yes, within 15 days of delivery, as long as the piece is unworn and in its original packaging. Return shipping is paid by you. Email support@blessmuse.com first and we will send the return address. If it breaks with normal wear within 30 days, we will repair or replace it. Returns & Exchanges
